Brynmor Early Education & Preschool exemplifies the transformative power of adaptive reuse of a historic property through the conversion of a portion of the Lorton Workhouse into a vibrant educational environment. The design skillfully repurposes the existing structure, creating a welcoming and humanizing space that beautifully contrasts with its former use as a prison. With innovative ceiling treatments and an inviting atmosphere, this project masterfully embodies a “death to life transformation” that the jury found profoundly impactful. The conversion not only respects the historic core of the site but also fulfills the vision of the Fairfax County Laurel Hill Master Plan, promoting a socially positive use that benefits the surrounding community.
A couple years ago, early education and childcare expert Rhian Allvin made a drastic change. After decades working in policy and advocacy, Rhian decided to start Brynmor Early Education and Preschool, which now has sites in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
